As an avid Guitar Hero player, I think the second ad is absolutely awesome. What a perfectly suiting visual metaphor for someone approaching expert for the first time.
However, my main concern would be that the use of the game playing field with relation to the metaphor would be lost on someone not already familiar with the game. Someone outside of the loop may not readily put together that those are the notes you have to play with the corresponding buttons of the plastic guitar controller (read. Axe of Rock Odin).
